Collection: California - Deserts and Eastern Sierra

In this below-sea-level basin, steady drought and record summer heat make Death Valley a land of extremes. Towering peaks are frosted with winter snow. Rare rainstorms bring vast fields of wildflowers. Lush oases harbour tiny fish and refuge for wildlife and humans. Despite its morbid name, a great diversity of life survives in Death Valley.
We then drove up Highway 395 through the Eastern Sierra area of California, spending a couple of nights at our starting point Lone Pine where we visited Mt Whitney Portal and the Alabama Hills. We then traveled up through Independence, Bishop and Big Pine to Lee Vining where we stayed for four nights before setting off up Tioga Pass to Yosemite NP.
